FAQ – Common Questions About rTMS/TMS
Can rTMS be performed on an outpatient basis?
Yes. rTMS is frequently carried out on an outpatient basis, without any inpatient admission. Whether outpatient or inpatient treatment is more appropriate depends on the presenting symptoms and the medical assessment.
Who can perform rTMS?
rTMS is a medical procedure and should be carried out under medical responsibility with appropriately trained staff and established safety standards. Professional societies describe qualification and training requirements for therapeutic brain stimulation (e.g., curricula and certifications).
Who prescribes TMS therapy?
TMS/ rTMS is not generally “prescribed” in the way a medication is, but rather medically indicated and planned. In many cases, referrals come through the treating specialist (e.g., in psychiatry); depending on the setting, referrals from general practitioners or other healthcare providers may also be possible.
